Functional Dry Needling

Dry needling is a skilled intervention that uses a fine needle or Acupuncture needle to penetrate the skin and stimulate underlying myofascial trigger points, muscular, and connective tissues for the management of neuro-musculoskeletal pain and movement impairments.

This technique is used to treat dysfunction in skeletal muscle, fascia, and connective tissue to diminish persistent peripheral nociceptive input.

Dry needling of myofascial trigger points via mechanical stimulation causes an analgesic (pain relieving) effect. This mechanical stimulation causes a local twitch response (LTR). An LTR is an involuntary spinal cord reflex contraction of the muscle fibers in a taut band, essentially resetting the muscle to normal tone often with immediate pain reduction and increased range of motion. Triggers points can be caused by chronic muscle overload, acute trauma or micro trauma, faulty postures, bad ergonomics, a structural variation or psychological distress.

The indwelling needle may be used in unison with electrical stimulation allowing for greater treatment comfort and longer lasting benefits.

*Dry needling is not currently recognized by insurance companies and is thus offered as an a la carte cash pay service only.
