Ski season is here…Are you at risk of re-injuring your knee?

Recent research has identified several factors that would indicate a significant risk of re-injury after ACL reconstruction. In order to reduce our patient’s risk of re-injury, we have integrated these findings in to our screening process for allowing patients to return to sport. Should I Get An X-Ray?

This may be one of the questions we most often hear in the clinic. Although there are many times when an x-ray or other imaging test may aid in the diagnosis and/or treatment decisions, it is likely that there are just as many cases where these tests are unnecessary. There may also be some risk from routine imaging tests like x-rays and CT scans. A recent article from the Harvard Health Newsletter discusses these risks. The most important question to ask when considering these type of tests is, “Will the results significantly change how the condition is managed?” For instance, for people who experience an acute episode of LBP without significant trauma, x-rays are very unlikely to change the course of treatment and, therefore, are unnecessary. We encourage you to have a discussion with your physical therapist and/or doctor regarding the risk versus reward of imaging.

What About Glucosimine and Chondroitin?

We are often asked if Glucosimine and Chondroitin supplements will help people with joint pain. A recent review in the British Medical Journal concludes that there is no benefit from these supplements in people with hip or knee pain. However, many of our patients report some benefit from using these supplements, and the authors of the BMJ review conclude that the supplements are likely safe. We recommend patients consider other non-surgical options like MANUAL PHYSICAL THERAPY AND EXERCISE, and consult their primary care physician regarding dietary supplements.

Can Pain Cause Depression?

In cases of musculoskeletal pain, it is sometimes all too easy to consider the pain a simple, physical problem. However, there is a wealth of evidence that pain has a psychological component. For instance, there are clear links between pain and depression, especially when the pain becomes chronic. With regard to low back pain, psychological components often play a more important role in the prognosis than many physical factors. If you feel that you may be experiencing depression, anxiety, or even fear related to your pain, make sure to discuss these feelings with your physical therapist so that these symptoms can be considered in your treatment plan.

Pre-Operative Consultation

We are continually frustrated by the lack of information given to patients prior to surgery. So, in order to improve the patient experience following surgery, KEPT has designed a Pre-Op consultation for the following procedures: ACL Reconstruction, Total Knee Replacement, Total Hip Replacement and Resurfacing, Rotator Cuff Surgery, and Spine Surgery. The consultation is FREE, and will include a booklet outlining your procedure, a screening examination, and suggestions for exercise prior to surgery.
